Year 3 Newsletter – Term 1, 2021

Welcome to Year 3, 2021. We hope you all enjoyed your holidays and are ready for a busy term 1! We are pleased to introduce you to the 2021 Year 3 teachers:

Important Dates / Upcoming Events
Homework is a compulsory part of the Year 3 curriculum. Students need to return their homework on time and to a good standard. Students will use some of their own time to complete the tasks at school if this is the case. Please continue to listen to your child read and practise their addition and subtraction facts each night. Some students may be learning and practising multiplication and the related division facts. Homework will be given to students each Monday and is to be returned on Friday.
- Reading for meaning, finding and explaining the main ideas in a story and making inferences.
- Reading for different purposes; that is, enjoyment, research and finding relevant information.
- Developing and using strategies for working out the meaning of unfamiliar words and words in context.
- Answering questions about texts verbally, in writing and from multiple-choice options while justifying and proving answers.
- Learning to use correct punctuation, spelling and paragraphs when writing sentences and texts.
- Learning to plan and write a narrative, including a beginning, middle and end.
- Using sound, syllable and familiar patterns to assist and improve their working knowledge of spelling, using the THRASS approach.
- Developing neat handwriting that is carefully formed and consistent in size and slope.
- Listening attentively to retell and summarise accurately.
- Asking and answering questions, volunteering information and justifying their opinions.
- Practising using appropriate tone and volume in all speaking situations.
- Sharing their ideas, insights and discoveries clearly with others
- Using place value to determine the size and order of whole numbers to tens of thousands then applying this knowledge to solve addition and subtraction problems.
- Revising and learning addition facts using the strategies.
- Recognising the relationship between addition and subtraction.
- Recalling the multiplication and related division facts of 2, 5 and 10.
- Creating and interpreting simple grid maps to show positions and pathways.

Creating and interpreting simple graphs, making factual statements about the information in the graphs.

Using everyday opportunities to gather information, record data and make accurate statements about their findings.
Integrated Studies
This term our topic is “We are One, We are Many.” The questions we will be focussing on are:
- What are Australia’s national symbols, emblems and why are they significant to Australia’s culture?
- What are Australia’s celebrations and commemorations and why are they significant to Australia’s culture?
- Why is it important to remember/celebrate our heritage and our nation?
- How have people from various cultural groups contributed to the nation and local community?
